ready for the holidays? i am not even close! here’s what I’ve been working on for a new client. She needed some corporate headshots as well as interior shots taken of her medical practice. i have a few more jobs before the end of the year, and maybe, just maybe, i’ll get a chance to tuck my wish list into Santa’s pocket, leave out a homemade treat for him and his 9 majestic reindeer, and take in some hot cocoa with my son while we decorate.

bagels and hard hats event

On July 13th, Naperville Bank and Trust held the Bagels & Hard Hats event that celebrated an unveiling of their plans for the new branch located at the old downtown Naperville Post Office at 5 S. Washington St.

The event presented its guests with an exciting transformation that is set to take place over the next several months while also remaining an active postal location on one side of the building. The importance of preserving the history of the old post office was also pointed out.

Speakers during the event included:
Mayor George Pradel, Post Master Dennis Lyons, Naperville Bank & Trust President Tom Miers, architects Jeff Leitz and Bruce George from the Charles Vincent George Design Group, and Peggy Frank, President CEO of The Naperville Heritage Society and Naper Settlement.

…yesterday I had the pleasure of working in downtown Naperville, IL taking photos of the winners from the Main Street Promenade Holiday Giveaway.

the grand prize winners arrived in a chauffeured limo provided by Belgio’s to the winning location where Joanna and Daniel Zitny were certainly surprised by all the attention being received. their prize from the merchants totaled $1,000 in assorted gift cards!!
Joanna entered her winning raffle at Coldwater Creek Spa.

merchants were also on hand to pose for pictures and congratulate all the winners. other prizes won were a Nook from Barnes & Noble, and goodies from Sur La Table, and Restoration Hardware.

after the presentation, Joanna and Daniel were whisked away to a horse drawn carriage around the downtown area provided by Forest View Farms, and then to dinner at Hugo’s Frog Bar & Restaurant. Congratulations to all!!

posting upgraded…..

….just received an email that my posting in yesterday’s Triblocal.com (part of media parent Tribune Company), for “Fire Breaks Out In Woodridge” has been selected to lead Woodridge’s local coverage. If you didn’t catch the story, here it is once more: http://triblocal.com/woodridge/community/stories/2011/01/fire-breaks-out-in-woodridge/

Once again, timing and being camera ready worked out well. I’m thinking of heading back to the scene before this blizzard develops in hopes of finding a fire investigator there, and asking them some questions. If I do, they will definitely be posted here.

being camera ready….

…. whenever I see a flurry of police and fire trucks rushing out with their sirens blaring, a sudden urge overcomes me and the need to follow the action ensues.
This is where I briefly want to emphasize being camera ready.
It doesn’t matter what your specialty subject is, as I truly believe your camera always needs to be near you and ready to go at a moments notice. Always have your batteries fresh and a lens on the camera. There’s nothing worse than fumbling around in your bag gathering accessories while your missing the action.

Prime example: Today I witnessed a fire in a residential area that engulfed almost the entire home. I managed to capture a few pictures. One which I posted here for the local paper before officers evacuated the area due to extreme smoke and obvious danger the blaze posed: http://triblocal.com/woodridge/community/stories/2011/01/fire-breaks-out-in-woodridge/

Yes, there are those rare times, even I fell as a recent victim to. Camera was with me, but for silly reasons left my bag in the trunk. Once I got to the destination, it was too late to turn back and had to capture any pics with my Android. Obviously not the same.

10-23 for now…..

insomnia, a surprisingly wicked welcome

….when the only things audible on this night are the soft hum of the refrigerator and the owl in the distance, there is time to recompose. silence truly can be golden. i normally do not care to describe my bouts of insomnia as favorable, as there are many an ugly battle up there, and i pay for them dearly during the day. there is of course an exception that leads to creativity on a roll. as such is the case tonight.

it is not perfect, but neither am i.

ink to paper, i rolled this out:

***

i hear the clang of steel hitting steel picking up speed.

my weary body slowly rises as i balance against the jerky movements rocking me side to side. i manage to grasp on to the railing and peer outside. greeted by a smack of cold wind whipping against my face,

i shun the sting, and turn my head noticing the specks of lights below race by as my steel cage grants me passage through this town.

the smell of diesel hits my nostrils, and my ears ring from the blaring whistle announcing our arrival. I’m on a 1 track lane high above the others heading anywhere, except what i used to call home.

as i push myself against the cold steel box, i stumble and fall into my grim surroundings. for now, this is where i lay.
